Saddle Ridge Gold Coins Recovered by Californian Couple May Have Been Stolen from Mint: US Mint

CALIFORNIA (Scrap Monster) : Over thousands of 19th century gold coins recovered by a Californian couple from a private property at Saddle Ridge, according to the United States Mint would have been stolen from the mint. The couple who recovered the $ 10 million worth gold coins dated from 1847 to 1894 may not be lucky as the coins are said to belong to the Government. It is assumed that these coins minted in US would have been stolen in 1900 and buried in the Saddle Ridge property to be recovered now and therefore should belong to the Govt.

Last week, the news of Californian couple discovering 1,427 Saddle Ridge Gold coins came up to the astonishment of numismatics across the world. The couple spotted the coins buried in the property as placed inside an old can. After the discovery of the rare gold treasure, they immediately informed a leading numismatic company in California, which carried out the initial evaluation of the inventories. According to the numismatic company, Kargin’s Inc, the coins exhibited amazing quality in spite of its life span of mintage of over a century. The unidentified couple is reported to have hired the company and a western American dealer and auctioneer, Holabird-Kagin Americana to represent them.

According to reports, the coins are in minted condition and uncirculated and have face value of $ 27,000. It is also reported that the gold coins matches with a gold heist in 1900 from the San Francisco Mint in America. The rarity of one of the coin – The 1866 Liberty $20 gold piece accounts for its absence of the words “In God We Trust”. This rare coin alone is expected to be worth $ 1 million currently. This coin according to the mint would have been a private coin minted in early 1865, minted as a mark of revenge for Lincoln’s assassination. However, the US Mint stated that they do not have any solid evidence about any theft from any US mint facilities.
