World Lead Market Demand Exceeded Supply, Says ILZSG

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The International Lead and Zinc Study Group (ILZSG) has published the December edition of its monthly ‘Lead and Zinc Statistics Bulletin’. The ILZSG data indicates that global refined lead market demand surpassed supply during the first ten months of 2017. The report provides deep insight into global lead market conditions during the above-mentioned period.

According to provisional data released by ILZSG, world lead metal demand exceeded supply, thereby pushing the market to a deficit of 173,000 tonnes during the initial ten-month period of the current year. Over this period, the total reported lead stock levels recorded modest decline by 40,000 tonnes.

The lead mine production reported increase in China. India too reported significant increase in mine output. The other major producer to report jump in mine output was Kazakhstan. However, the increase in production was partially offset by sharp decline in production by Australia and the US. The overall global lead mine production soared nearly 3.8% during Jan-Oct ’17 when compared with the corresponding ten-month period in 2016. The world lead mine output during Jan-Oct ’17 totaled 4.133 million tonnes as compared with 3.983 million tonnes during the corresponding ten-month period in 2016.

The refined lead metal production during Jan-Oct ’17 totaled 9.664 million tonnes, significantly higher by nearly 3.8% when compared with the output of 9.307 million tonnes during corresponding period the year before. The refined lead metal production reported significant jump in China. The year-on-year jump in refined metal output was also on account of increased production from other countries including Canada and India.

The global demand for refined lead metal increased sharply by 3.6% to 9.837 million tonnes during January to October this year. The Chinese apparent usage surged higher by 11.3%. The European apparent usage increased modestly by 3.6%. The refined metal demand in the United States too reported a jump of over 5% during the first ten months of the current year.

The Chinese imports of lead contained in lead concentrates totaled 856,000 tonnes, rising sharply by nearly 36% over the previous year. The net imports of refined lead metal by the country amounted to 440,000 tonnes. It must be noted that the imports have recorded significant jump of over 22% from the previous year.

The ILZSG preliminary data indicates that monthly global lead mine output totaled 1,207.0 kt during the month of October this year alone. The global refined lead metal production totaled 1,211.50 kt, whereas global lead metal usage totaled 1,248.4 kt during the month.
