Recycling body announces addition of Sonoco as its latest funding partner

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Hartsville, North Carolina headquartered packaging provider Sonoco has become a member of The Recycling Partnership. The company, as a funding partner, will assist the national nonprofit in its effort to reshape the recycling industry.

Jeff Meyers, vice president of operations for The Recycling Partnership stated that its partnership with Sonoco will help to bring better recycling programs to communities across entire North American region. The addition of Sonoco to its fold will not only help to boost recovery of consumer packaging, but also to improve the quality of recovered materials, Meyers added. The association with The Recycling Partnership will help the company to exceed the set aggressive sustainability goals, said Laura Rowell, manager of global sustainability for Sonoco. The partnership will contribute towards improvement of people and communities through reductions in greenhouse gases, energy and water usage.

National non-profit The Recycling Partnership has worked with more than 250 communities over the past two years, offering improved recycling experience for nearly 10 million households. The Partnership has allocated grants in excess of $21 million towards enhancement of recycling infrastructure. Nearly 395,000 recycling carts have been newly added into the stream. Also, its public awareness and education campaigns have reached more than 40 million people. According to Meyers, the non-profit plans aggressive expansion by securing new projects. New tools will be introduced to take recycling to the next level, it noted.

Recently, Sonoco had pledged investment of $20 million in the development of a new packaging center to support Duracell’s new North America battery packaging operation. Also, it had announced completion of acquisition of Peninsula Packaging Company, a leading manufacturer of thermoformed packaging, for approximately $230 million. Cascades-Sonoco-a joint venture between Cascades Inc. and Sonoco Products had announced fresh investment of $16 million to expand its Birmingham, Alabama operations. The proposed investment in water-based coating technology is expected to help the company to expand its range of water-based products into fast-growing markets such as southeastern US.

Founded in 1899, Sonoco is a global provider of consumer packaging, industrial products, protective solutions and display and packaging services. Headquartered in Hartsville, S.C., it has nearly 330 operations spread across 34 nations. Sonoco develops and deliver innovative packaging solutions that enhance and optimize their business and brands.

The Recycling Partnership, previously called Curbside Value Partnership (CVP), is a national recycling nonprofit formed in 2003 with the goal to improve recycling in the United States. It bridges the gaps between the communities and the industries that benefit from recycling by creating campaigns that power local recycling programs and help solve and energize curbside recycling problems.
