Recycler rejected 0.4 million tonnes of paper in 2015 on quality concerns

CANTERBURY (Scrap Monster): Mark Lyndon Paper Enterprises UK has announced that it was forced to reject nearly 400,000 tonnes of paper due to quality issues. The OCC and mixed paper offered by potential suppliers were rejected for either violating permitted contamination levels or having found to contain excessive moisture levels.

Mark Lyndon Paper Enterprises UK managing director Paul Briggs noted that the company’s inspection team who checked thousands of bales at various locations across the country, came across several bales containing high quantities of non-target materials. He also hinted at possibilities of materials being collected from open containers or collected materials being exposed to rain or stored in damp premises. Those bales which were found to have moisture levels exceeding the set limit were rejected.

Briggs noted that despite rejecting huge quantities of low-quality fibre, the company turned out successful in exporting more than 1.5 million tonnes of high-quality fibre to Chinese paper recycling mills during the year. He thanked suppliers, government agencies and CCIC London for their continued support in ensuring high-quality fibre export. The company will work towards raising the quality in 2016 and in the years to come, Briggs added.

Mark Lyndon Paper Enterprises UK receives scrap corrugated cardboard directly from recovered paper collectors, supermarkets, local authorities and retail outlets. This material is shipped to recycling facilities in China operated by the Lee and Man paper group. The Lee and Man group recycles over 4 million tonnes per annum of old corrugated boxes and up to 1 million tonnes of this recycling is provided by Mark Lyndon Paper Enterprises UK.
