SYDNEY (Scrap Monster): Rare collection of colonial coins worth $1 million has been stolen from the State Library of NSW during Wednesday.
The thief has stolen 12 rare coins by breaking a glass display secure cabinet. The stolen coins are dated between the year 1850 and 1920.
The coins included a "Holey Dollar" and a “Dump” Coin. Honey dollar is a special and rare coin from the 19th century, in which there is a hold in the center. Dump coin is the coin that put at the center of the Honey dollar.
Alex Byrne, State librarian said that the thief stole 12 coins among the 15 from the display cabinet. He added that they were deeply disappointed by the callous act of public vandalism.
Police said that the same man could be the culprit for the robbery reported from a CBD hotel after two hours. The man has stolen a set of diamond earnings, a gold pendent and three diamond rings from the hotel.
The total value of the jewellery is estimated to be about $75,000. Forensic tests are now going on to determine whether the two thefts were done by the same person.
