Plastics trade body responds to study on marine debris

CANTERBURY (Scrap Monster): PlasticsEurope-one of the leading European trade associations has responded to the recent study report on marine litter published in Science magazine last week. The trade body welcomed the study report as it helps to better understand the effects of marine litter. However, the industry is committed to tackle this menace through nearly 200 industrial projects in place.

According to Karl-H Foerster, Executive Director, PlasticsEurope, the plastics industry is seriously concerned about marine litter. Additionally, it has always been proactive in taking necessary action to prevent negative impacts of the same. The trade body also conducts various events and conferences to increase awareness about plastics waste management techniques.

Earlier in 2011, the European Plastics Industry had launched ‘Zero Plastics to Landfill’ initiative to reduce the quantity of post-consumer plastics ending up in landfills. Seven EU member nations, Norway and Switzerland had introduced measures including landfill bans. The trade body suggested that phasing out landfilling along with strict enforcement of existing waste rules remain the key to tackle this issue.

The findings of a research released on Thursday had indicated that nearly eight million metric tonnes of plastic waste makes its way into oceans every year. The study conducted by the National Center of Ecological Analysis and Synthesis at the University of California had warned that mismanaged plastic waste between 4.8 million tonnes and 12 .7 million tonnes are washed into the world’s oceans annually.
