Plastic Bags and Expanded Polystyrene Bags banned in Morgan Hill

MORGAN HILL, CALIF. (Scrap Monster) : Morgan Hill officials on Oct 2nd, announced their approval of banning plastic bags and expanded polystyrene bags , the hazardous wastes of humanity. The city council embraced the ordinance as a good step towards creating a better world without plastic wastes.  The very thought of banning PS foam bags dates back to 2011 when the debate over plastic bags and its dangerous impacts on human being and environment lead to the need for taking this strong decision. Even though ban has been induced on plastic bags, it will come to force only on April 22, when the whole world celebrates the World Earth Day. This is obviously glad news for the residents of Morgan Hill which would ensure the life of around 37,000 of its population.

As part of the ban, it is decided that plastic bags would be replaced with paper bags and that customers could buy these bags from stores after paying 10 cent for each. To begin with the promotion of using paper bags, stores are advised to give away free reusable paper bags on special days.  The ban is valid to all retail establishments; however non-profit resale stores and restaurants would be exempted.  Others like fish, meat and poultry sold out from a butcher is also not liable under the ban.

A recent survey showed that a majority of food outlets made use of PS bags because of which they are concerned with the ban. Rich Constantine, the Council member of Morgan Hill said that this ban has already made many restaurants to alleviate plastic bags and replace them with their harmless counterparts. Morgan Hill joins the 80 other municipalities in California to ban plastic bags.
