Peru lifts restrictions, Chinalco resumes copper mining at Toromocho

LIMA (Scrap Monster):  Aluminum Corporation of China (Chinalco) has announced that it has resumed the halted copper mining operations at the Toromocho project in Peru. The Peru Environmental Protection Agency had ordered temporary suspension of mining activities on March 28th following incidents of waste water spillover detected in the mines that contaminated two lakes.

According to the company press release, the spillover was caused by rainfall. The company upgraded the water management system at the mines. The Peruvian EPA officials who visited the site on April 11th found that the corrective measure by the company had fully solved the issue and lifted the restrictions on copper mining activities.

The company further stated that the copper mining operations have restarted in full swing. It plans to achieve full production capacity by Q3 2014.

Chinalco controls the Toromocho Project in the centre of the South American country, one of the largest pre-production copper plants in the world. The company is reported to have invested $4.8 billion since it began developing the mine in 2008. When fully operational, the mine is expected to produce around 300,000 tonnes of copper.

Peru is the second biggest copper producing country in the world.
