Outerwall Inc. eyes increased e-waste collection through ecoATM recycling kiosks

SPOKANE (Scrap Monster): Outerwall Inc. has announced plans to collect at least 2 million pounds of electronic waste including used mobile phones, tablets and other electronic accessories over the next three years through its network of ecoATM recycling kiosks. The announcement to this effect was made at the Clinton Global Initiative’s 10th Annual Meeting.

The company operates nearly 1,100 ecoATM kiosks located at key shopping centers and other retail outlets across the country, through which it collects tonnes of obsolete electronic devices from customers. The worldwide auction system ensures that the consumer gets the most reasonable price for the dropped item.

According to the company, almost 75% of the devices collected through the ecoATMs find second life. The balance 25% devices are responsibly reused and recycled. Outerwall has strategic partnerships with leading electronic scrap recycling facilities which ensure environment-friendly recycling of the used electronics.

"We can all make a tremendous impact if each person commits to reducing their personal e-waste footprint," said J. Scott Di Valerio, CEO of Outerwall. "ecoATM was created to make it easy and rewarding for people to sell their devices for reuse and recycle, thereby reducing their impact on the environment."
