NUMSA rejects 10% pay rise, calls to intensify strike action

SPOKANE (Scrap Monster): The striking National Union of Metalworkers in South Africa (NUMSA) has rejected the offer to raise the pay by 10%. In a statement released yesterday, the union called upon the 220,000 striking members to further intensify the strike action.

"Should the employers continue with their reckless shenanigans and unreasonable demands, we might be left with no option but to call for targeted solidarity in all our sectors. This is seriously under consideration.", said Irvin Jim, General Secretary, NUMSA. He added that the offer was taken to the employees on Thursday and was straightaway rejected by them.

The strike has already entered into second week. The employers had offered to raise the salaries by 10% this year, by 9.5% in 2015 and by 9% in 2016. However, the country’s biggest trade union had refused to accept the wage hike offer. Furthermore, the union has threatened to drag another 100,000 of its workers in other sectors who are not presently on strike.

According to reports, the strike has already affected companies supplying components and parts to car industry. Upon non-availability of component parts, General Motors has decided to temporarily shut down its Port Elizabeth assembly unit. The strike has also affected other manufacturing sector companies.

Meanwhile, Steel and Engineering Industries Federation of Southern Africa (Seifsa) has expressed deep disappointment over NUMSA’s rejection of the offer.
