NS Paper mill granted 9 months to fix emission violations

OTTAWA (Scrap Monster): The provincial administration granted Northern Pulp, nine more months to fix the air quality emission violations. According to the compliance order issued by the government, the company should fix the excess emissions from recovery boiler before May 30th next year. Failure to fix the problem could lead to cancellation or suspension of operation approval.

The order states that the air quality stack emissions from a recovery boiler unit of the company’s plant in Abercrombie Point, Pictou County exceed the stipulated limits. The emissions are found to have caused damage and health problems to residents and businesses in the area. As per the order, the company is ordered to install a new electrostatic precipitator before the set deadline. The residents had demanded immediate closure of the facility.

The tests conducted earlier had indicated that the company produces emissions that are 78% above the legal limits. However, the company spokesperson claimed that significant progress has been made since then. He further stated that the company has already initiated remedial actions. Furthermore, he expressed confidence that the company will be able to meet all the conditions as mentioned in the compliance order within the deadline.

Meanwhile, the provincial government stated that there exist no immediate health threats due to emissions from the mill.
