Novelis Publishes 2017 Sustainability Report

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Georgia, Atlanta-headquartered Novelis Inc. has released the Sustainability Report for the fiscal 2017. The report released by the world’s leading producer of rolled aluminum and the global leader in beverage can recycling outlines progress made by the company in achieving various sustainability goals.

According to the 2017 Sustainability Report, the company’s commitment to operational efficiency and strategic product shift in FY17 resulted in record financial performance. The adjusted EBITDA, net income and free cash flow increased considerably over the previous fiscal. The company also reported notable growth in automotive aluminum shipments.

Operationally, Novelis has increased its use of recycled-content inputs in from 53% in FY16 to 55% in FY17. This is a significant improvement when compared with the baseline of 30% and the FY15 use of 49%. It also reported considerable reduction in water usage and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In water usage, it has already achieved the FY20 target, whereas it has almost reached close to Fy20 target of GHG emissions.

The company has made encouraging progress in its sustainability drive. However, its waste to landfill rate and energy intensity increased marginally upon comparison with the previous fiscal. Novelis noted that it will use its technical and operational expertise to solve these challenges at its facilities worldwide. Also, it reported three serious injuries, including one fatality across its worldwide manufacturing and recycling facilities. Although, the figures represent improvement over the previous fiscal, the company will continue to maintain safety as the top priority in order to attain ‘zero injury’ rate across all its facilities. It must be noted that 11 out of 24 Novelis’ facilities had reported zero recordable injuries during FY17.

Novelis, in partnership with Jaguar Land Rover reclaimed 50,000 tons of aluminum scrap. This has resulted in prevention of at least 500,000 tons of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere. Also, the company partnered with Ford to develop the world’s largest closed-loop recycling system for aluminum intensive F-series trucks. This has resulted in Ford recycling and reusing more than 90% of the scrap generated during the stamping process.

The 2017 Sustainability Report states that the company supported as many as 317 community projects and committed more than $4 million in support of local and global causes, as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. In addition, it pledged $1 million to Habitat for Humanity International over the next five years.
