Novelis announces major recycling expansion in Brazil

ATLANTA (Scrap Monster): Novelis- the Atlanta-based rolled aluminum producer and beverage can recycler has announced launching of critical expansion projects at its Brazilian recycling centre. The company has started expansion works and commissioning of enhanced coating line facilities at its recycling centre in Pindamonhangaba complex, Brazil.

According to sources, the company has already invested nearly $106 million in the project. Upon completion, the company intends to add additional 100,000 tonnes of coating capacity and 190,000 tonnes of recycling capacity. The expansions will help Novelis to meet the increasing beverage can demand in the country and contribute significantly towards improving recycled content in its products. The expansion works are likely to double the capacity of the plant from the existing 200,000 tonnes per annum to 390,000 tonnes per annum.

The company had earlier announced its decision to increase the North American automotive aluminum production from 50,000 tons in 2013 to 260,000 tons in 2014 and to 365,000 tons in 2015. Its $500 million expansion works at the Oswego aluminum plant is nearing completion. Novelis also aims to increase the recycled content in its products to 80% by 2020.

Novelis produces rolled aluminum in Brazil at its Pindamonhangaba facility in Sao Paulo.
