Northern Pulp's Abercrombie mill seeks renewal of operating permit

HALIFAX (Scrap Monster): The Northern Pulp’s Abercrombie Point mill awaits renewal of its operating permit from the province. The permit is about to expire this month end. The mill is reportedly seeking five-year operating permit.

The draft industrial approval released by the province’s Department of Environment had laid down several criteria that need to be met by the company in order to receive extension of its permit. The draft approval also requires the company to reduce its water usage and waste water by 40% by 2020. The province is currently reviewing 96 written comments, majority of them being from members of the Clean the Mill group in Pictou County.

Meanwhile, NS Environment Department stated that the tests conducted at the mill during November revealed that the maintenance operations conducted during the month of September have brought the particulate emissions from the power boiler within the limit set by the Department. However, emissions from the recovery boiler were found to be still at slightly higher levels than the legal limits. The particulate reading at that time was still 78% higher than acceptable levels. However, the company states that the levels have improved by more than 25% now.

As per the legally binding order issued during August last year, the paper mill is required to get its air quality emissions in line before May 30th, 2015. Northern Pulp stated that the pollution control equipment to be installed during May this year would bring the facility in line with other North American mills.
