North American Primary Aluminum Production Dropped 10% in 2016

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Aluminum Association has announced publication of the latest edition of ‘Aluminum Statistical Review’. The comprehensive report published yesterday includes all key statistical data and information on entire global aluminum value chain through 2016, with special focus on the aluminum sector activity during the past decade. The report suggests notable jump in aluminum imports and continued growth in aluminum demand.

According to the report, the aluminum demand in the US and Canada totaled 26.4 billion pounds in 2016, marginally higher by 2.6% over the previous year. The demand had totaled 25.7 billion pounds in 2015. The aluminum demand in the region recorded seventh straight year of increase. When compared with 2009 levels, the demand has surged by over 40%. The demand growth was mainly on the back of robust requirement from automotive sector. The aluminum shipments to the sector hit new record of 5.9 billion pounds in 2016. The total aluminum imports by the US and Canada too touched record high of 7.3 billion pounds. The inward shipments skyrocketed by almost one-third in 2016.

Heidi Brock, President & CEO of the Aluminum Association noted that more and more companies have started to look at aluminum as the best solution to modern manufacturing challenges. However, he noted that the dramatic rise in imports by the region is quite alarming. More effective measures need to be adopted to address overcapacity in Chinese aluminum sector. Simultaneously, governments need to implement trade actions required to guarantee a level playing field, Brock added.

The North American primary aluminum production totaled 8.9 billion pounds, down by almost 9.8% when compared with 2015. The shipments to the transportation sector totaled 9.3 billion pounds, accounting for 35.2% of net shipments during the year. Meantime, the shipments to Building and Construction market have increased marginally by 3.3% year-on-year to total 3.2 billion pounds. The shipments to Container and Packaging sector too were up by 1% over 2015, totaling 4.8 billion pounds.

The Canadian aluminum exports totaled 8.2 billion pounds, registering an increase of 8.5% over 2015.
