ISRI Design for Recycling Award 2018 Entries Invited

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Washington-based Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) has invited applications for the 2018 Design for Recycling (DFR) Award. The award recognizes companies for their outstanding contributions in designing innovative products with recycling in mind.

The DFR award recognizes manufacturers, companies and designers for the proactive steps undertaken in designing and producing products that fully support safe and efficient recycling at the end of their lives. It encourages manufacturers to visualize the ultimate destiny of their products even during the product design stage. The products must be designed in such as way that recycling of them brings in benefits not only to the environment but also to the economy. As stated by Robin Wiener, president of ISRI, effective recycling begins at that point when a new product is first conceived.

In order to be eligible for the award, the product must be designed/redesigned and manufactured by including the maximum amount of materials that are recyclable. They must be easily recyclable using the currently available and future recycling techniques. The cost of recycling of the product must not exceed the value of its recycled materials. In addition, the products must be made with maximum recycled materials. Moreover, they must be free of hazardous materials and other hard-to-recycle materials.

The winner of the 2017 Design for Recycling Award was Arlington, Texas-based EcoStrate SFS Inc. Samsung Electronics had won the award in 2016. The winner of the 2015 DFR award was LG Electronics. Other previous winners of the award include Dell Inc., Cascades Fine Papers Group, US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Hewlett Packard (HP) and Coca-Cola Recycling Company.

The application window for online submission of entries will remain open until February 23, 2018. The deadline for request of additional information will be March 2, 2018. All received applications will be thoroughly reviewed by an expert panel between March 7th and 14th. The participants will be notified latest by March 16, 2018. The winner of the prestigious award will be honored during the ISRI 2018 Convention and Exposition to be held April 14-19, 2018 in Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, Las Vegas, NV.
