Niue Government Launches New Coin to commemorate Centennial of Panama Canal

ALOFI (Scrap Monster): The Government & Treasury of Niue has introduced a new coin that marks the centennial of Panama Canal, which is known as one of the greatest modern wonders of the world.

Panama Canal greatly helps to reduce the travel time for ships from Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. It enables to avoid the lengthy and dangerous Cape Horn route around the southernmost tip of South America through the Drake Passage.

Panama Canal was opened officially in 15th august 1914. This was one of the most and ever difficult engineering works designed by human. In 1914, through the canal about 1000 ships passed through it. Seven years ago, the total number of ship that used the canal route was about 14,702.

The Mint of Poland has made the coin for the Government & treasury of Niue. It includes a latent image on the reverse and on the obverse there is a digital application of a full color image.

The image of the reverse side represents the historic moment of the first ship passing through the Panama Canal. Along the rim and above the image of the ship there is a text “100 YEARS OF THE PANAMA CANAL”.

The image on the obverse side portrays a wind rose against a map showing the Canal. In the left upper corner, there is an image of small coin which has the image of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Around the coin, there are writings “NIUE ISLAND”, “1 DOLLAR” and “ELIZABETH II” Coin also has the year of issue “2014” and the mint mark of m/w.
