'New Plastics Economy' Initiative Announces PepsiCo As New Core Partner

SPOKANE (Scrap Monster):  Food and beverage giant PepsiCo has joined the New Plastics Economy (NPE) initiative as a Core Partner. The participation in the initiative led by Ellen MacArthur Foundation reflects the company’s continued commitment to reduce packaging waste. Incidentally, PepsciCo is the initiative’s latest core partner, after Amcor, The Coca-Cola Company, Danone, MARS, Novamont, Unilever, and Veolia.

PepsiCo’s partnership with NPE initiative will help the company to increase packaging recovery and recycling rates. Mehmood Khan, PepsiCo’s vice chairman and chief scientific officer of global research and development noted that the company has always been committed to promote sustainability within its direct operations. The collaboration beyond the walls will contribute immensely towards creation of more sustainable packaging ecosystem. The association with NPE is one of the series of collaborations the company has already undertaken, he noted. Khan also said that the company is much delighted to associate with the initiative as a core partner.

By joining the partnership, PepsiCo has advanced its 2025 Sustainability Agenda. The Performance with Purpose Plan designed by the company is focused on delivering sustainable long-term growth while leaving a positive imprint on society and the environment. It aims to have 100% of its packaging to be recoverable or recyclable by 2025 and reduce greenhouse gas emissions across its value chain. As per estimates, the company has achieved 18% improvement in energy efficiency at its legal operations between 2006 and 2015. As part of its broader agenda, PepsiCo aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by further 20% by 2030.

Recently, the company had entered into an agreement with the global biotechnology leader Danimer Scientific to scale up its biodegradable film resins to be used for PepsiCo’s flexible packaging solutions. The agreement also calls for expansion of Danimer Scientific’s Nodax PHA plant and development of next-generation bio-based compostable packaging to be used for packaging PepsiCo’s snack brands.

Endorsed by more than 40 industry leaders, the New Plastics Economy initiative provides a global action plan to switch to a new plastics system that works with the principles of circular economy. The initiative involves a broad group of leading companies, cities, philanthropists, policymakers, academics, students, NGOs, and citizens. The initiative focuses on taking concrete steps in delivering better economic and environmental outcomes through creation of sustainable plastics systems.
