New iTSCi programme data demonstrates reduced human rights incidents

SEATTLE (ITRI.CO.UK):  The iTSCi responsible minerals programme has published an update on its incident data with figures for 2011-2016. The report shows that human rights issues in 3T mining operations in the DRC, including protection of national parks, and key concerns such as child labour or threatening behaviour, have reduced from 19% in 2011 to 12% of incidents in 2016. Corruption cases have also reduced. Awareness raising, training and other activities have clearly had a positive effect.

In total 3,064 incidents were recorded and managed across 1,341 mine sites in four countries, according to the new figures. The programme has overseen effective risk identification and management of more than 90,800,000 kg of mineral concentrate, traded through more than 5.4 million in-region business transactions.

In addition, during 2016, iTSCi expert teams undertook 400-500 site visits per month to mining areas, mineral processing and storage facilities and along transport routes.
