New hi-tech sawmill facility to open in Bonfield, northern Ontario

TORONTO (Scrap Monster): International Wood Industries (IWI) has announced plans to build new state-of-the-art sawmill facility in Bonfield, northern Ontario. The company will spend $145 million towards the new facility.

According to media release issued by IWI, the construction is expected to begin in October this year, further to various approvals. The construction is expected to run until December 2018 and the mill facility is expected to commence operation by January 2019. Once fully operational, the sawmill facility is expected to create 87 new well-paying jobs in the region. Hiring for positions that needs to be filled before sawmill facility opening will commence this fall.

IWI plans to rezone 212 acres of land located at Highway 17 and Trout Pond Road in the Township of Bonfield, where the new facility would be built. The land has already been purchased and the permits and licenses towards rezoning are expected to be received soon. Environmental assessments and traffic study are under process. The company officials stated that it projects an annual payroll budget of $4.5 million.

The facility will include a hi-tech sawmill, three drying kilns, a planer mill, moulder mill and computer numerical control (CNC) facilities. It will also include other facilities including an administrative office and employee cafeteria. In addition, the main processing plants will be supported with ancillary buildings, IWI officials noted. The site will have separate entrances for employees and logging trucks.

The modern facility will process softwood and hardwood, producing a wide range of value-added products in addition to lumber. Also, the wood waste from the operation will be processed on site to create pellets. The facility will make use of modern technologies to ensure zero-emissions and minimum noise and traffic. The high end equipment will help the mill to achieve significant cost cuts, thereby helping it to remain competitive in challenging market conditions.

Meantime, Mattawa-Bonfield Economic Development Corporation (MBEDC) noted that the announcement is a huge one. Although, the proposed facility will be located in Bonafield, the entire region is bound to receive the benefits of the sawmill facility. The facility is being built in collaboration with surrounding townships, railways and other agencies. The partnership with Ottawa Valley Railway (OVR) and Madadjiwan First Nation is expected to aid smooth progress of construction activities. MBEDC noted that the proposed annual payroll of $4.5 million is a huge investment. The full-time jobs in the region will lead to general upliftment of the entire community, it added.
