New BAN initiatives likely to boost exports of reusable electronics

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The new initiatives announced by the Basel Action Network (BAN) are likely to favor increased exports of reusable electronics. The issue of electronics reuse and refurbishment had so far been a subject of argument with in the Basel Convention.

In its press release dated November 5th, BAN extended support to exports of select “high-end electronics” for the purpose of refurbishment and reuse. The group also came up with a softened interpretation of regulations towards determination of laptop and battery waste. The clarification of its stand on exports of reusable electronics follows the discussions on the topic during BAN’s Working Group meeting held recently.

The initial Basel Convention Treaty drafted in 1980’s contained clauses which hinder exports of hazardous materials from developed countries to less-developed nations. According to the body, the exception announced now provides more clarity on the issue of when used electronic equipment could be categorized as waste and when not to. The exception is issued with the aim of extending the life cycle of electronic goods that can be repaired or reused, added BAN.

BAN’s move to embrace reuse and repair was widely hailed by supporters of reuse including Fair Trade Recycling.

However, no mention is being made as to when the suggested changes will be officially included in the Convention.
