Nearly 13.5K Gold and Silver Coins Recovered from Shipwreck Site

WASHINGTON (Scrap Monster): Odyssey Marine Exploration during its search at SS Central America Shipwreck site has discovered gold and silver coins and other items related to cultural heritage.

About 13,500 of gold and silver coins have been recovered from the shipwreck site. The deep sea marine exploration company has released a full data of the recovered treasure on July 18. The data showed that there was a wide variety of gold and silver coins, which also included $20 double eagles.

The company added that there were not only double eagle coins but also coins with denominations $10, $5, $2.50 and $1 and Californian fractional gold.

Coins of smaller denominations were also found at the site.

Along with the precious coins, there were also gold ingots, dust, nuggets and foreign gold.

The coins dated from 1823 to 1857 and is a time capsule of virtually all the coins, which were used in 1857, said Bob Evans, the chief scientist for Recovery LTD partnership. He added that the coins were just astonishing.

They also discovered some historical items which includes a pistol handle, an alabaster figurine, a Daguerro photographic plate and wooden domino pieces.

Mark Gordon, Odyssey President and chief operating officer said that this discovery showed a clear-cut picture of pre-disturbance and recovery of items on the surface of the shipwreck site.

The company is due to release another report on July 25 after some work, which is scheduled to be conducted between mid-June and mid-July. The company had reported that during the first two hours of  exploration in May, it had discovered about 1,000 ounces of gold worth $1.3 million.
