NAID to challenge NJ rule that restricts hard drive erasure

HAMILTON (Scrap Monster):The National Association for Information Destruction (NAID) has termed the NJ’s regulation on hard drive destruction as unnecessarily restrictive. The association has decided to support the initiative launched by NY-based Guardian Data Destruction.

As per regulations imposed by the NJ Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), organizations need to obtain a state-level environmental license to shred hard drives. The DEP regulation states that destruction of hard drives in any manner requires a general or limited Class D Recycling Center approval. According to NAID, the regulation restricts the options to destroy obsolete hard drives containing personal information. Moreover, the regulation interferes with data destruction policies of a number of financial and healthcare organizations.

The association extended its support to the battle initiated by Guardian Data Destruction against NJ’s arbitrary regulation on hard drive destruction. The support exhibits the association’s value to the industry and recognition of Guardian’s effective strategy to offer safest data erasure and shredding options, noted Steve Richards, President, NAID. He also announced that Dag Adamson, President of Massachusetts-based IT asset disposition services major LifeSpan will lead the project for NAID. Meantime, Guardian Data Destruction stated that they are delighted by the support extended by the rest of the industry, even though they are committed to fight the battle on their own.

NAID is the international trade association for companies providing information destruction services. NAID's mission is to promote the information destruction industry and the standards and ethics of its member companies. NAID is a registered acronym for the National Association for Information Destruction, Inc. and all of its subsidiaries and committees, including NAID, NAID-Europe, NAID-ANZ, NAID-Asia, and NAID-Canada.
