MoF: Japan's scrap exports dropped in June

The Japanese scrap exports increased slightly during June this year. The country's scrap exports totaled 750,000 tons during the month.

MoF: Japan's scrap exports dropped in June

TOKYO (Scrap Monster): The scrap exports by Japan during the month of June this year edged higher slightly, as per the latest data released by the country’s Ministry of Finance. According to MoF data, the country’s scrap exports totaled 750,000 tons during the month. The exports were down marginally by 3.7% when compared with the exports during the same month a year before.

The Japanese scrap exports increased sharply when compared with the previous month. The exports were higher by nearly 5% when matched with the exports of 715,000 tons during May this year.

The largest importer of Japanese scrap during the month of June this year was South Korea. The scrap imports by South Korea totaled 349,000 tons, constituting nearly 47% of the total scrap exports by Japan during the month. The scrap exports to South Korea dropped by nearly 18.5% over the previous year. Japan had exported 428,000 tons of scrap to South Korea during June 2014.

The cumulative scrap exports by Japan during the initial six-month period of the year totaled 4.137 million tons. This is 10.6% higher when compared with the exports of 3.741 million tons during the corresponding six-month period in 2014.

During January to June this year, South Korea remained the largest importer of Japanese scrap. The South Korean scrap imports from Japan totaled 1.60 million tons, accounting for 39% of the total Japanese scrap exports during the six-month period. In second place was China with 1.03 million tons. The third largest export destination for Japanese scrap was Vietnam with 700,000 tons.
