Missouri scrap metal businesswoman sentenced for tax evasion

KANSAS CITY (Scrap Monster): The owner of a Kansas City scrap metal business has been sentenced to 18 months in federal prison without parole for tax evasion.

Federal prosecutors say 62-year-old Nellie Brown Boxx, of Kearney, was sentenced Tuesday. She also was ordered to pay $366,846 in restitution to the Internal Revenue Service and the Missouri Department of Revenue.

Boxx, the owner of Frank Metal Company in Kansas City, pleaded guilty in February. She admitted that she helped prepare tax returns with false information, such as claiming food items, jewelry, dry cleaning and clothing as expenses for her scrap metal company.

Boxx also admitted that she submitted a false form in 2008 to receive a bank loan and that she made false statements to IRS agents.
