Minnesota recycles world's largest paper ball after making Guinness entry

SAINT PAUL (Scrap Monster): The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) entered into the Guinness Book of Records, by making the world’s largest paper ball. The ball was created to highlight the economic and environmental value of responsible recycling. The ball which was kept on display at the Minnesota State Fair was later recycled completely.

The paper ball was 9 feet 7 inches tall, 32.2 feet in circumference, and 426 pounds in weight. The ball was made without using glue, adhesive or tape. The confirmation of the award was conveyed to the MPCA by the Guinness authorities last week. According to MPCA, it aimed to promote paper recycling by creating the ball. Studies had showed that nearly 1 billion pounds of paper ends up in Minnesota’s landfills without being recycled or composted. On the other hand, many recycled paper manufacturers in the state indicated that they face acute shortage of waste paper, forcing them to rely on post-consumer paper from other states.

The recycled paper for the paper ball project was donated by Eureka Recycling- a zero-waste organization based in Kennedy Street Northeast, Minneapolis. The volunteers took almost a day and a half to build the ball.

After the fair, the ball was Rock Tenn in St. Paul for recycling, which in turn was used to produce liner board, for making paper packaging such as cereal and food boxes.
