Mining is the top paying industrial sector in the country: Mining Association of Canada

MONTREAL (Scrap Monster): The Mining Association of Canada (MAC) in its ‘Facts and Figures 2013’ report indicates that mining is the top paying industrial sector in the country. The sector employs approximately 418,000 people either directly or indirectly. The report notes that Mining continues to remain as a major contributor to the country’s economy and prosperity.

The report states that Mining is one of the highly paid job categories in the country. The average weekly wage of people in the industry is more than $1,550, higher than the average wage in many other sectors including finance, manufacturing, construction and forestry.

According to the report, Canada is one of the leading mining countries and one of the largest producers of minerals and metals. The industry accounted for 20.4% of the value of Canadian goods exports in 2012, selling a diversified array of minerals abroad. Exports of aluminum, copper, gold, iron and steel, iron ore, nickel, silver, uranium, zinc, diamonds, potash and coal ranged from $1.5 billion to $17 billion each. Canada remained the world’s top destination for exploration spending in 2012, hosting 16% of global investment.

In 2012, Canadian mining and metals companies invested $638 million in research and development (R&D). Mining’s investment surpassed that of the motor vehicles and parts sector, the machinery sector, and the wood products and paper sector.

The report also suggests that industry and Canadian government should work together to address key domestic challenges in order to support new mining growth and ensure the country remains an attractive place to mine or list
