Mexican PET recycling giant doubles capacity

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Mexican PET recycling giant, PetStar has doubled its capacity through installation of new wash plant unit. The company, partly owned by Coca-Cola, is believed to have made significant investment to boost its recycling capacity. With the installation of the new wash plant, the facility at Poluca near Mexico City has now become the largest of its kind in entire Latin American region.

The plant was supplied by Italian Amut SpA. The plant uses patented technology to remove polluting materials from PET flakes, thus producing flakes suitable for solid-state polycondensation (SSP) processing. According to sources, the plant will have a recycling capacity of 1.5 billion bottles per year. It is being considered as the largest food-grade PET recycling plant in the world.

AMUT has been devoted to the manufacture of extrusion plants for processing thermoplastic materials even since it was established in 1958. Over this period AMUT has established itself as a leading Company in both the field of extrusion and, since the 1980´s, in plastics recycling plants.

PetStar is part of recycling services company Avangard Innovative Ltd, of Houston. Promotora Ambiental SAB de CV, a Mexican environmental services company with operations in four dozen Mexican towns, is a partner. The PetStar facility enjoys huge investments from Coca-Cola Co. and half a dozen of its Mexican bottlers
