Massive fire breaks out at Phoenix recycling facility

PHOENIX (Scrap Monster): Media reports indicate that a two-alarm fire which engulfed the Arizona Pacific Pulp and Paper, Inc. (APPP) at 36th Street, south of Phoenix Sky Harbour International Airport is currently under control. The fire was up to three alarms at one point of time.

The fire broke out at around 4.30 PM on Tuesday. Thick black fumes surrounded the neighborhood of the recycling plant. Firefighters from Phoenix Fire Department were called to the scene. As per initial reports, authorities could not exactly identify the cause of the fire yet. Meantime, no casualties have been reported so far. Unconfirmed reports state that the fire has spread to nearby businesses as well.

Sources indicate that the strong wind blowing in the area has made the job tough for firefighters. As a result, the Department is being forced to take a defensive approach in putting out the fire. The piles of cardboard which caught fire have resulted in emission of large quantities of toxic black smoke, thereby causing environmental pollution in surrounding regions. However, airport operations remain unaffected, with no flight delays reported so far.

This is not the first incident of fire-breakout at Arizona Pacific Pulp and Paper, Inc. The same facility had reported fire incidents in 2013 and 2014. Large amounts of debris had caught fire during July 2014. The fire had burned huge quantities of paper and other recyclable materials. Also, a massive fire had broken out at the facility in April 2013, which had destroyed stockpiles of cardboard and other materials inside the building facility.

APPP serves the entire state of Arizona as well as its surrounding states. It processes waste paper and supplies mills with the highest paper stock for American and Worldwide products.
