Massive fire at Maple Ridge mill leads to 65 layoffs

VANCOUVER (Scrap Monster): A huge fire Saturday night at Fraser Cedar Products in Maple Ridge has resulted in significant losses. Almost three-quarters of the main building have been destroyed. According to sources, the mill will remain closed until further notice. Almost 65 workers are reportedly facing layoffs.

The fire started around 9.30 PM. Fourteen fire trucks from Maple Ridge and Mission responded to the fire. Around 70 firefighters worked until midnight to get the fire under control.

According to fire officials, the mill had undertaken some repair works during Saturday morning. The sprinkler system in the mill was damaged by some equipment. The work was immediately stopped. However, the fire occurred late evening when all the workers had left site.

According to company management, the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation.

No injuries were reported.

It will take more than a year to rebuild the mill completely. However, a portion of the mill can be made operational by addition of new equipment. As of now, the mill remains closed and the 65 workers in the mill face layoff.

This is the second fire incident in the mill in less than a year. Earlier in December 2013, fire caused by a spark from a welder’s torch had damaged the chipper building of the mill.
