Latin American steel exports to the US soared 31% in Sep '14

Latin American steel exports to the US soared 31% in Sep '14

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): As per data released by the US Census Bureau, steel exports from Latin American region to the US surged by 30.9% in September this year over the exports during same month the previous year.

The total steel exports from Latin America to the US in September amounted to 776,019 tonne. This is 30.9% higher when compared to the total exports of 592,687 tonnes during September 2013. The value of the exports was up 48% in September to $591 million from $399 million during same month last year.

Brazil accounted for almost 53% of the total exports. The exports from Brazil totaled 409,035 tonnes during September. The second largest steel exporter to the US was Mexico. The steel exports from Mexico during the month totaled 332,696 tonne, jumping by more than 38% from 239,749 tonnes exported during September 2013.

Argentina’s steel exports to the US tumbled by nearly 17% from 15,613 tonnes in September 2013 to 13,007 tonnes in September this year. The exports from Colombia recovered during the month. The year-on-year exports from Colombia to the US grew by 28% from 749 tonnes in September last year to 959 tonnes this year.

By value, Mexico was the biggest exporter of steel to the US. The total steel export value of Mexico during September amounted to $321 million, followed by Brazil with $234 million. The total steel export value by Mexico and Brazil during September 2013 were $195 million and $172 million respectively.
