Kruger announces indefinite closure of Brompton newsprint machine

MONTREAL (Scrap Monster): Kruger has decided to suspend operations of a paper machine at its Brompton mill for an indefinite period. The idled PM 1 is believed to have an installed capacity of 100,000 tpy. The company cited unfavorable market conditions and reduced demand for newsprint as the reasons for closure. The decision is intended to rebalance the company’s order book and improve the mill’s competitive position.

The company press release states that the closure will be with effect from November 14th this year. Around 98 out of the 360 employees are feared to be affected by the decision. According to Kruger, all efforts will be made in order to minimize the effect of the closure on its employees.

The mill located in Sherbrooke, southern Quebec has three paper machines that produce high-quality newsprint from thermo-mechanical and recycled pulp. The mill also has a de-inked pulp line producing some 140,000 t of recycled pulp. The total capacity of the remaining two paper machines in the mill amounts to 305,000 tpy.

Founded in 1904, Kruger Inc. is a major producer of publication papers, tissue, lumber and other wood products, corrugated cartons from recycled fibres, green and renewable energy and wines and spirits. The Company is also a leader in paper and paperboard recycling in North America. Kruger operates facilities in Quebec, Ontario, British Columbia, Newfoundland and Labrador and the United States.
