JSW Steel Thinks Over To Use Goan Iron Ore

NEW DELHI (Scrap Monster): Followed by the decision of Supreme Court to lift the mining ban in Goa,  JSW put a consideration to use iron ore from the state for its Dolvi steel plant in Maharashtra. The steel plant needs 5.5 million tonnes of ore every year. At present the company is searching for good source of raw materials from Chhattisgarh and Odisha.

Previously, the plant had slashed the usage of Goan ore for it’s another plant at Toranagallu of Karnataka district. This is due to low quality of the ore. They stated that the iron ore from Goa contains only 45 pct of iron and requirement is about 55- 58 pct. The plant usually needs 18-20 mt iron ore for a year. However, due to the quality problems they cut Goan ore.

But now they are thinking out to use it in their Dolvi plant in Maharashtra. They are thinking to take the ore through sea route. They also added that before it should be used in plant, it had to be beneficiated. Followed by the Supreme Court order, government of Goa started the sale of 11.5 mt of iron ore at mine heads and jetties. JSW tested the samples of ore at various ports; found that it is not of their requirement. However, according to some miners there are ore with 58 pct iron content and they are waiting for that to be tested.
