Jobless man has called illegal scrapyard home for 30 years

BEIJING (Scrap Monster):A pile of used mattresses at an illegal dump on St John Hill here is home to a 70-year-old man who makes a living selling scraps he finds from the heap of garbage.

The man, who claims to be Indonesian and goes by the name Imen, said he came to Malaysia from his home in Pulau Sumbawa via an Indonesian work agency in 1984 but was cheated out of a job.

The frail man wore only a tattered T-shirt and shorts, and mumbled incoherently to any question he was asked.

Imen’s plight came to light when enforcement officers carried out checks on the dump on March 10.

“I find it strange that a homeless man could live in the dump for 30 years without being seen by locals here,” said Yusof Abu Hassan, special officer to Malacca Historic City Council mayor.

“We only found him while checking on the illegal garbage dump,” he said in an interview after visiting the 4ha area located in a densely populated neighbourhood.

Yusof said Imen, who carried around a defaced permanent residence card, would sell recyclable materials to scrap metal dealers.

“I have referred Imen to the state Welfare Department and also made arrangements for him to be sent home,” he said.

On the illegal dump, Yusof said the council would act against trucks indiscriminately leaving garbage there.

“This site should not exist in an urban area,” he said.

“We will now track down the owner of the land while zooming in on the garbage-collecting contractors who use the site.”
