ITRI wins prestigious Sustainability Leaders Award

SPOKANE (Scrap Monster): Leading Tin industry association-ITRI has won the prestigious edie Sustainability Leaders Award 2017 in recognition of its sustainability efforts. The tin industry representative won the award for Sustainable Supply Chains, as part of its dedicated work and success in bringing positive change in the tin supply chain. edie award is organized by specialist sustainability publishing house Faversham House.

The winner was selected from among other applicants that included BT, Coca-Cola, Encirc, McDonalds, Resolute Forest Products and TUCO. The winners were announced at an awards ceremony held at the Hilton Hotel, Park Lane, London.

Commenting on the big achievement, ITRI's Manager of Sustainability Kay Nimmo noted that ITRI is delighted to know that its hard work has been recognized with the award of one of the highest accolades for sustainability in the corporate sector. He thanked all ITRI members for their vision and iTSCi members for their participation, with which it was able to bring about dramatic changes to supply chains. He also highlighted the valuable contributions made by other organizations such as T.I.C., Pact and Synergy Global Consulting.

The judging panel commended ITRI’s sustainability initiatives, stating that its innovative and wide-reaching Tin Supply Chain Initiative (iTSCi) has delivered excellent results within a few years of operation. It noted that iTSCi has the potential to expand to more geographical locations, in order to help tackle a wide range of social and environmental issues in supply chains across the world.

The iTSCi program, launched in 2010, assists companies with due diligence and responsible sourcing of minerals from high risk areas. The iTSCi Programme is a joint industry membership programme designed to assist companies with traceability, due diligence and audit requirements on purchases of minerals from high risk areas as recommended in the OECD Due Diligence Guidelines and UN recommendations. It establishes traceability in the upstream supply chain from mine to smelter, and downstream companies such as product manufacturers. iTSCi brings companies together to work constructively and efficiently through avoidance of duplication, correct management of extensive information and data, and cost savings throughout the supply chain.

iTSCi program has enabled enabling artisanal and small scale tin miners in Democratic Republic of Congo and other central African countries to break links between mineral production and funding armed groups. The program which started in 2011 in Katanga and Rwanda was later extended to the provinces of South Kivu and Maniema in 2012. The participation with iTSCi has helped communities around the mines to grow economically and peacefully, the judging panel observed. Furthermore, it has resulted in significant environmental protection.
