Italy's Iron Ore Imports Plunged Heavily in Jan-Aug ‘17

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The latest trade statistics released by the Directorate General of the European Commission (EUROSTAT) suggests considerable decline in iron ore imports by Italy during the initial eight months of the current year. Meantime, the monthly import volumes were up nearly 11% in August, upon comparison with the same month a year before.

The imports in August this year totaled 606,062 tonnes, higher by 10.7% when compared with the imports of 547,378 tonnes recorded during August last year. The largest exporter of iron ore to Italy was Brazil. The imports from Brazil totaled 605,889 tonnes at an average price of $83.4 per tonne. The country accounted for bulk of the imports by Italy during the month. The other key supplier during the month was France (155 tonnes).

The imports of agglomerated iron ore skyrocketed by over 446% to 284,142 tonnes. This accounted for nearly 47% share of total iron ore imports by Italy during the month. The only supplier of agglomerated iron ore was Brazil. The imports from Brazil were valued at USD 29.080 million at an average price of $102.3 per tonne.

Non-agglomerated ore imports by Italy totaled 321,920 tonnes, falling significantly by 35% over the year. Brazil continued to remain as the key supplier during the month. The imports from Brazil averaged at $66.7 per tonne, generating total value of $21.455 million. Italy’s imports from Brazil totaled 321,747 tonnes. The other key supplier of non-agglomerated iron ore to the country was France (155 tonnes).

According to EUROSTAT data, Italy’s combined iron ore imports during the first eight months of 2017 totaled 5.12 million tonnes, considerably down by 19.4% when matched with the imports of 6.35 million tonnes recorded during the corresponding eight-month period last year. The cumulative imports from Brazil totaled 3.420 million tonnes, followed by Mauritania (802,951 tonnes), South Africa (695,276 tonnes), India (101,000 tonnes) and Ukraine (98,106 tonnes).

The combined quarterly agglomerated ore imports totaled 1.455 million tonnes. This is almost 24% down when matched with the imports of 1.905 million tonnes during Jan-Aug ‘16. Brazil accounted for bulk of the agglomerated iron ore imports by Italy during the eight-month period. The supplies from Brazil totaled 1.256 tonnes. The other primary suppliers during this period were India (101,000 tonnes) and Ukraine (98,106 tonnes).

The non-agglomerated ore imports by Italy during Jan-Aug ‘17 totaled 3.663 million tonnes, significantly lower by nearly 18% from 4.450 million tonnes last year. The value of imports amounted to $285.8 million at an average of USD 78.0 per tonne. The imports from Brazil totaled 2.164 million tonnes, followed by Mauritania (802,951 tonnes) and South Africa (695,276 tonnes) in second and third places respectively.
