ISRI Surveys to Garner Feedback on Recycling Challenges

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) has sought feedback from industry experts in an attempt to equip Reducing Embodied-energy and Decreasing Emissions (REMADE) Institute to better face recycling challenges. Incidentally, REMADE is a body formed by the US Department of Energy (DOE) towards streamlining the recycling procedures and techniques with the aim of attaining maximum recycling efficiency. ISRI is an affiliate member of REMADE.

The ISRI has invited industry feedback on various technical and economical constraints faced by today’s recycling industry. Companies who are non-members of REMADE are encouraged to participate in the four surveys designed by the Institute. Industry participants can submit their feedback in any or all of the four surveys- Managing Manufacturing Material (Feedstock) Consumption, Design Tools and Methods for Reuse, Remanufacturing and Recycling, Improving Recycling and Recovery and Sustainably Growing your Remanufacturing Business.

Survey participants can respond to the survey by identifying and describing the biggest challenge faced by them. In the next step, they are allowed to review minimum of five responses from other participants to identify the impact of them on their company. Also, survey participants can continue to review and rate the comments from other participants to identify the most common issues facing the recycling industry. The survey offers option to revisit the same later in case the participants feels like submitting additional feedbacks at a later stage.

According to REMADE Institute, the surveys will remain open until the end of this month. The information collected from survey inputs will be used to revamp its operational strategies in order to meet the proposed five-year goals. As part of its five-year target, REMADE aims to improve manufacturing material efficiency by 5-10%. It also envisions 50% increase in remanufacturing applications and 30% increase in efficiency of remanufacturing operations. In addition to 30% jump in recycling efficiencies, REMADE also aims to achieve 50% increase in sales by the US manufacturing industry.

REMADE Institute is a coalition of country’s leading universities and companies that strive to implement clean energy initiatives aimed at keeping the US manufacturing industry competitive. The coalition is led by the Sustainable Manufacturing Innovation Alliance.
