Iron Ore Imports By EU Members Surged 19% in May

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The most recent import trade statistics released by the European Union Statistics Office (EUROSTAT) suggests significant surge in iron ore imports by EU region during the month of May this year. The iron ore imports by the region were up during the initial five-month period of the year.

The iron ore imports by EU member countries in May 2017 totaled 9.962 million tonnes. The imports surged higher by 19.1% over the previous year. The iron ore imports by the region had totaled only 8.364 million tonnes in May last year. The top three ore importing nations during the month were the Netherlands, France and Germany. These three countries accounted for more than 53% of the total imports during the month. The ore imports by the Netherlands, France and Germany totaled 2.595 million tonnes, 1.507 million tonnes and 1.203 million tonnes respectively.

The imports of non-agglomerated ore by the EU region totaled 7.729 million tonnes, significantly higher by nearly 29% over the previous year. The top importer of non-agglomerated ore during the month was the Netherlands. The imports by the Netherlands totaled 2.211 million tonnes, followed by France with 1.085 million tonnes. The total value of non-agglomerated ore imports amounted to $634.019 million. The import prices averaged at $82.0 per tonne.

Agglomerated ore imports by the EU member countries totaled 2.232 million tonnes, marginally lower by 5.3% upon comparison with the previous year. The net value of imports amounted to $262.96 million. Germany was the key consumer of agglomerated ore in the EU region. The imports by Germany totaled 569,206 tonnes during the month. The other main importers were France (422,488 tonnes) and the Netherlands (384,745 tonnes).

As per EUROSTAT data, EU region’s combined iron ore imports during the first five months of the year totaled 46.537 million tonnes, marginally higher by almost 8% when matched with the imports of 43.152 million tonnes recorded during the corresponding five-month period in 2016. The largest consumer of iron ore during the five-month period was the Netherlands. The imports by the Netherlands totaled 12.087 million tonnes, followed by France with 6.754 million tonnes.

The agglomerated ore imports during Jan-May ’17 edged higher by 8.9% to total 12.634 million tonnes. The imports during the corresponding five-month period in 2016 had totaled only 11.596 million tonnes. The Netherlands was the key importer of agglomerated ore during this period. The imports by the country totaled 2.732 million tonnes. In second place was Germany with total imports of 2.407 million tonnes.

The non-agglomerated ore imports during the five-month period totaled 33.903 million tonnes. The imports were up by 7.4% from 31.556 million tonnes last year. The value of imports amounted to $2.603 billion at an average of USD 76.80 per tonne. The imports by the Netherlands totaled 9.354 million tonnes, followed by France with 5.070 million tonnes.
