Iran set to provide major boost to steelmaking capacity by 2015-'16

ABU DHABI (Scrap Monster): Iran is all set to commence production from new steelmaking capacity towards the end of Q1 2015. The first phase of the production facility by Sefid Dasht Steel Company in the country’s Chahar Mahal and Bakhtiari province will be inaugurated on 21st March, 2015. The second and third phase of the project is also expected to come online during 2015-’16. This will add approximately one million tons per annum to the country’s crude steel output.

During his visit to the project site, Mohammadreza Nemtazadeh, Iranian minister for Mines, Industry and Trade stated that the project had suffered significant delays since 2009 due to various technical reasons. However, the inauguration of the direct reduction unit is scheduled to take place between March 2015 and March 2016. This will be immediately followed by commissioning of the steel making plant and casting units.

The Ministry expressed satisfaction at the physical progress of the plant so far. The plant, once operational, will provide nearly 1,000 direct jobs and over 7,000 indirect jobs. Other 8 major steel projects are also underway in Iran, the completion of which would further boost the country’s crude steel production.

Incidentally, as per latest data released by the World Steel Association (World Steel), the total crude steel production by Iran during June ‘14 was 1.375 Million tonnes, down 3.3% in comparison with the May ‘14 production of 1.422 Million tonnes. The cumulative steel output by the country during the first half of the year totaled 7.982 Million tonnes.
