International Paper crosses 2-billion milestone in recyclable box production

SPOKANE (Scrap Monster): Memphis, Tennessee headquartered packaging and paper major International Paper has announced that it has reached a historic milestone by producing over 2 billion recyclable, water-resistant packages. The press release issued by the company notes that the proprietary ‘ClimaShield’ boxes have made significant contribution to sustainability and environmental safety through reduction in energy consumption and landfill waste. Over the past 20 years, ClimaShield boxes have been successful in reducing emission of green house gases.

After several years of innovative research and development activity, International Paper had released the recyclable water-resistant ‘ClimaShield’ coatings in 1996. Earlier in 1990’s the company had launched extensive research for development of recyclable poultry packaging. Towards end-1990’s it had come out with the first proprietary moisture barrier coating for poultry industry. Around 2000s it revolutionized wick-resistant medium which gained widespread industry acceptance. After that, the company deployed new coating for bliss packaging and expanded applications.

The company claims that ClimaShield provides unsurpassed cold-storage packaging for all meat applications. The boxes are easily recyclable and are certified by the Fibre Box Association (FBA). The recyclable boxes can be sold into existing OCC recovery system, which makes it cost-effective for customers. It is also compatible with the existing process and packaging machinery. According to the company, ClimaShield is safe for the environment and also safe for all protein products.

During March this year, the company had begun a year-long celebration to mark 20 years of the launch of ClimaShield packaging. As per estimates, more than 75 million ClimaShield boxes are produced, and shipped across the US every single month.

According to Ron Wise, vice president, International Paper, the incredible strength and value offered by ClimaShield have helped to boost the company’s commitment to customers. It has helped customers to achieve their business and sustainability goals, he noted. ClimaShield has also helped to preserve box performance and protect cold-storage foods, he added.

Food scientists have endorsed that ClimaShield packaging is the safest method of packaging fresh foods, including fruit, vegetables, poultry, pork, steer and seafood. In addition to protecting food produce, the unique packaging has protected the environment in a big way. Over the 20 years since its introduction in 1996, this has avoided green house gas and carbon dioxide emissions equivalent to waste produced by over a million people per year. It has helped in offsetting landfill waste from over 76 million garbage bags. It has avoided green house gas emissions equivalent to emissions from 230,000 passenger vehicles driven in one year. Further, it has saved energy equivalent to the energy used in nearly 100,000 homes in a year.
