Indian government to offer financial aid to boost e-waste management

NEW DELHI (Scrap Monster): The Indian Environment Ministry has announced the launch of a new scheme to promote safe e-waste handling practices by providing financial assistance to firms indulged in e-waste management. The Ministry also proposed to set up integrated e-waste recycling facility in the country at the earliest.

Addressing the Parliament, Prakash Javadekar, Environment Minister stated that financial assistance will be utilized towards creating public awareness about the hazards of improper disposal of electronic waste and towards capacity building activities by e-waste management firms. He stated that the government under the 'Creation of Management Structure for Hazardous Substances' scheme will set up an integrated recycling facility for electronic waste.

The Minister also informed the House that guideline for strict implementation of E-Waste Rules 2011 has been already created. The respective State Pollution Control Boards are authorized to monitor whether the e-waste recycling facilities comply with the set standards. Processing e-waste in unsound manner may lead to emission of toxic materials that may cause harm to human health and surrounding environment. The violation of rules by e-waste management facilities will be seriously looked into, he added.

According to survey carried out by various agencies, the e-waste in India has grown at an alarming rate during recent years.
