Imports & Exports of US brass mill products make strong start to 2017

ALBANY (Scrap Monster): According to the Copper and Brass Fabricators Council (CBFC), the imports of brass mill products by the US during the month of January this year have increased significantly when matched with the year before that. Also, exports registered modest rise year-on-year during the month.

January ’17 Imports

According to data, the US imports of brass mill products during January this year totaled 38.08 million lb, significantly higher by 14% when compared with 33.53 million lb imports registered during January 2016.

The main exporter of brass mill products to the US during January 2017 was Germany. The total imports from Germany during the month totaled 8.927 million lb. South Korea followed Germany with total exports to US amounting to 4.241 million lb. In third place was Canada. The brass mill products imports by the US from Canada totaled 3.371 million lb during the month. The other key exporters were Mexico (3.316 million lb) and China (2.469 million lb).

Imports by Product Type

Imports of all sheet, strip, plate and foil products totaled 12.399 million lb in January. All pipe and tube products imports totaled 13.436 million lb. Imports of all profiles, rods and bars totaled 9.013 million lb. Copper alloy wire imports totaled 3.233 million lb.

January ’17 Exports

In accordance with the data released by the CBFC, the US exports of brass mill products totaled 20.129 million lb in January this year, significantly up by nearly 13% when matched with the exports of 17.876 million lb during January 2016.

The key export destination for US brass mill products during January ’17 was Mexico. The exports to Mexico totaled 7.995 million lb. The other key importers of US brass mill products during the month were Canada (6.169 million lb), China (1.007 million lb), Germany (608,452 lb) and South Korea (528,731 lb).

Exports by Product Type

Exports of all sheet, strip, plate and foil products totaled 7.791 million lb in January this year. All pipe and tube products exports totaled 3.458 million lb. Exports of all profiles, rods and bars totaled 6.894 million lb. Copper alloy wire exports totaled 1.985 million lb.

Full year Imports/Exports in 2016

For the whole year 2016, US had imported 456.390 million lb of copper and brass mill products. This is 6.0% lower when compared with the imports of 484.825 million lb in the year before that. Exports during the year 2016 had totaled 241.047 million lb, compared with 244.103 million lb in 2015, recording a marginal year-on-year decline of nearly 1.2%.

The Copper and Brass Fabricators Council is a non-profit membership trade association open to any person, firm, or corporation engaged in the fabrication or production in the United States of products made, in whole or in part, from copper or copper alloys. 

Generally, the member companies are engaged in the production of copper and copper alloy sheet and strip, rod and bar, plumbing tubing, OEM or air-conditioning tubing, wire, extrusions, shapes and profiles, forgings, and fittings.  These products are used chiefly in the automotive, construction, and electrical/electronic industries.
