Huge demand from Automakers may pull aluminium out of a slump

NEW YORK (Scrap Monster) : Carmakers around the globe have hinted at the increased use of aluminium in place of the heavier steel. The use of aluminum is reported to enhance the fuel efficiency of the vehicle and make the vehicle more lighter.

Ford has announced that the next version of the most popular truck in the US,Ford F-150 pickup truck will add more aluminium content to it so as to reduce the weight by atleast 340 kgs. This decision has naturally forced competitors to follow the same route.

Currently around 150 kg of aluminum is used in each car. The automakers predict that this can increase up to 250 kg by 2015.

Studies have shown that for each 10% reduction in weight, the car can achieve 5% to 7% more fuel efficiency.

The use of aluminum is now confined to premium segment cars. The cost of aluminum is the only factor pulling back the extensive use of it.Aluminum suppliers foresee increased use of the metal in building various body parts. Strong demand growth in the automotive industry may bring up the metal prices from its presently lower levels.

It is quite uncertain whether the increased demand from automakers is sufficient enough to offset the global surplus of aluminum.
