JOHANNESBURG (Scrap Monster): Booming market of stainless steel products coupled with supply shortage from South Africa, has triggered the spot prices of high carbon ferro-chrome in global market. The spot prices of high carbon ferro-chrome South Africa have soared by US$10 cents to US$110 cent/lb.

So far, South Africa is the country with the largest production of ferro-chrome in the world.

But the power shortage combined with fierce weather condition, adversely affected ferro-chrome production in South Africa and prices are expected to soar since 2011.

Market analyst expecting the price of high carbon ferro-chrome in Europe would be driven up since the first quarter of 2011.

At the same time, the part of the US has increased its spot prices to US$140 cent/lb.

Most of the world's ferrochrome (FeCr) an alloy of chromium and iron containing between 50% and 70% chromium,  is produced in South Africa, Kazakhstan and India, which have large domestic chromite resources.

Increasing amounts are coming from Russia and China. The production of steel is the largest consumer of ferrochrome, especially the production of stainless steel with chromium content of 10 to 20% is the main application of ferrochrome.
