‘Green Guilt’ rate on the rise, says Call2Recycle survey

SPOKANE (Scrap Monster): The most recent national survey conducted by Call2Recycle Inc. shows that ‘green guilt’ rates have improved significantly among US residents. Green guilt refers to the feeling that one should contribute much more towards preservation of environment.

The rate increased to 34% when compared with 29% reported during a similar survey conducted in 2012. As per the survey, 39% of the women respondents experienced the ‘green guilt’ feeling, whereas the rate was even higher at 45% among respondents in the age group 18 to 44.

Almost 81% of the people who participated in the survey stated their willingness to recycle more batteries, cellphones and other small electronic items instead of throwing them in trash. However, around 70% pointed out that they face several barriers in recycling these items. Nearly one-third of the respondents were unaware of the methodologies or places where these items are to be recycled. Also, 22% were found unable to locate a collection event. In addition, respondents also highlighted that in many cases, local retailers are unwilling to offer electronics and battery take-back programs.

According to Call2Recycle, there has been a significant drop in the number of people who are unaware of how or where to recycle old items. This number has dropped to 33% when compared with 44% recorded during 2012 survey. Call2Recycle noted that their efforts to make recycling more available and accessible have paid off. However, more work need to be done to inspire more consumers to make recycling a part of their daily life, it noted.

Call2Recycle® is a product stewardship program providing no-cost battery and cellphone recycling solutions across the U.S. and Canada.
