Great Lakes Raw Steel Production jumps by 20,000 tons

WASHINGTON (Scarp Monster): According to recent estimates by American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), last week the production of raw steel had been increased to 589000 tons from the regions of US Great Lakes during last week, thereby resulting in overall output gains of 1.28 percent.

It is estimated that the increased production is about 20000 tons. Most of the raw steel production in the Great Lake province is taken from Chicago and Indiana region. Production from the Southern district also rose from 671000 to 682000 tons a week earlier

Steel production fell down by around 100,000 tons in early April after the US Steel shut down blast furnaces at Gary Works, because of difficulty in bringing raw materials across the icy Great Lakes. But now the conditions has been changed due to the climate change and high production from the great lake and the total domestic raw steel production was about 1.8 million tons more than that of the production from the week earlier.

US steel mills had a potential output rate of about 75.2 pct last week and this figure was about 74.2 pct a week earlier. Last year, it was reported that the capacity utilization rate had been 76.7 pct.

This year, domestic mill’s production rate is estimated to be 28.4 million tons. According to the world steel association, steel production globally was 141 million tons in March, higher by 2.7 pct year-on-year.
