GPI Invests $136 Million In Modernizing Macon Paperboard Mill

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Atlanta-based packaging manufacturer Graphic Packaging International (GPI) has decided to invest approximately $136 million in modernizing its Macon, Georgia paperboard mill. The announcement to this effect was made jointly by the Georgia Department of Economic Development and the Macon-Bibb County Industrial Authority. The proposed investment is expected to retain more than 460 manufacturing jobs.

The multi-million dollar investment will improve the mill’s production capability. The upgrade process involves installation of a new curtain coater. The water generator and air control systems at the mill will be upgraded to minimize the environmental footprints. In addition, the mill efficiency will see significant improvement through automation of certain processes that are presently carried out manually, the company press release stated.

The long standing relationship with Macon–Bibb County and the state of Georgia, ideal location of the facility, business-friendly climate in Macon and access to educated and skilled workforce were a few of the several reasons which prompted the company to select Macon-Bibb County as the location for further upgrades, said Michael Doss, president and CEO of GPI.

Meantime, Georgia Department of Economic Development Commissioner Pat Wilson noted that GPI’s decision to choose Macon mill for its modernization plan is a testament to the state’s position as a global leader in the industry. The investment reiterates the company’s commitment to be part of the community and state, said Robert Reichert, Mayor, Macon-Bibb County. Incidentally, GPI offers employment to over 1,300 in various mills across the state of Georgia. Apart from North America, the company also has facilities in Latin America, Asia-Pacific and Europe.

Earlier in November this year, GPI along with other North American subsidiary companies had reached an agreement to acquire the assets of Seydaco Packaging Corp.- a leading Canadian folding carton producer and its affiliates National Carton and Coating Co., and Groupe Ecco Boites Pliantes Ltée.
