Goodwill Industries partners with Dell to offer computer recycling in central Illinois

CHICAGO (Scrap Monster): Land of Lincoln Goodwill Industries in partnership with Dell has introduced a new recycling initiative in central Illinois. The new initiative ‘Dell Reconnect’ allows people to drop off their old computer equipment at any of the Goodwill locations. The computer products collected will be either recycled or refurbished and sold.

The computer items dropped off at Goodwill stores are inspected by staff members to determine whether they must be reused or recycled. The gadgets classified as ‘reusable’ are cleaned and tested to ensure that they are in good working condition. These devices are then resold through Goodwill stores. The devices which cannot be reused will be broken down and recycled. With the new partnership with Dell coming into force, Goodwill stores has started accepting older, heavy, stand-alone computer monitors, which it had refused to accept.

According to Greg Stumpf, chairman of the county’s Public Health, Solid Waste and Zoning Committee, the partnership between Dell and Goodwill will help to keep computers out of landfills. Meantime, Sharon Durbin, president, Land of Lincoln Goodwill Industries reminded customers to ensure that all data in hard-drives are erased before being donated.

Land of Lincoln Goodwill Industries is a nonprofit that provides job training, employment placement services and other community-based programs for people who have a disability, lack education or job experience or face employment challenges.
