World Crude Steel Output  Surged 2% In May

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): According to the most recent monthly production statistics published by the World Steel Association (worldsteel), the crude steel output by 67 member countries totaled 143.325 million tonnes (Mt) in May this year, rising modestly by 2.0% in comparison with the production of 140.481 Mt during the same month a year before.

The capacity utilization rate of member countries dropped to 71.8% in May. This is considerably lower by 1.8% than April 2017, but marginally higher by 0.5% when matched with May last year.

South America

The crude steel production by South American countries increased considerably during the month of May this year. The total monthly output was up by 10.2% to 3.691 Million tonnes.

The total crude steel production by Argentina during May was 394,000 tonnes, up by nearly 4% in comparison with the May 2016 production of 379,000 tonnes. Brazil produced 2.931 Million tonnes of crude steel, higher by 13.2% when compared with 2.590 Million tonnes production achieved during May last year. Chile’s crude steel production in May recorded 8.1% decline to 95,000 tonnes in May this year. The total crude steel production by Colombia edged higher by 2.7% to 110,000 tonnes in May this year.

Ecuador’s crude steel output has declined by 7.4% on year-on-year basis. The crude steel output by Ecuador was 45,000 tonnes in May this year, as compared with 49,000 tonnes during May last year.  Paraguay’s crude steel output plunged heavily by over 63% during the month.

The crude steel output by Peru recorded marginal increase of around 0.7% year-on-year. The crude steel output of Uruguay was up marginally by 3.2% when compared with the year before levels. Venezuelan production tumbled sharply by 36% year-on-year from 16,000 tonnes to around 10,000 tonnes.

North America

The crude steel production by North American countries remained more or less flat during the month of May year-on-year. The production totaled 9.760 Mt during the month, as compared with 9.758 Mt during May 2016.

The total crude steel production by Canada during May this year was 1.080 Mt, higher by 0.3% when compared with the May 2016 production. The US produced 6.995 Million tonnes of crude steel, marginally higher by 0.2% when compared with 6.979 Million tonnes production achieved during May 2016. The total crude steel production by Mexico dropped by 1% from 1.646 Mt in May ‘16 to 1.630 Mt in May this year.

The Cuban crude steel production recovered by 0.7% year-on-year to 20,000 tonnes. The crude steel output by El Salvador was estimated at 10,000 tonnes in May this year, up by nearly 17% when compared with May last year. Guatemala produced 25,000 tonnes in May. The crude steel output by Trinidad & Tobago continued to remain at zero.

Asia

The crude steel production by Asia surged higher by 2.4% during the month of May 2017 year-on-year.

The total crude steel production by China during May was 72.259 Million tonnes, marginally higher by 1.8% when compared with the production of 70.971 Mt during May 2016. India produced 8.500 million tonnes of crude steel, higher by 6.4% when compared with 7.989 Million tonnes production achieved during May last year.

Japan reported marginal increase of 0.1% in monthly crude steel output. Japan's crude steel output edged higher from 8.940 Million tonnes in May 2016 to 8.951 Million tonnes in the same month this year.

South Korean crude steel production dropped by 2.7% from 5.821 Million tonnes in May 2016 to 5.665 Million tonnes in May this year. Meantime, Pakistan’s crude steel output almost doubled to total 500,000 tonnes during the month.

The Taiwanese May ’17 crude steel output reported marginal jump of 1.3% year-on-year to 1.900 Million tonnes from 1.876 Million tonnes during same month last year. Also, Thailand’s crude steel output has increased by nearly 12% from 358,000 tonnes during May last year to almost 400,000 tonnes this year. Vietnam’s crude steel output skyrocketed by 97% over the previous year.

Africa

The crude steel production by the African region registered 10.5% jump during the month of May year-on-year.

Egypt produced 530,000 tonnes of crude steel, surging higher by 37.4% when compared to 386,000 tonnes production achieved during May 2016. Libya’s crude steel output declined to 39,000 tonnes during the month of May this year, when matched with the production of 48,000 tonnes during the same month a year before. Morocco’s output declined by nearly 8% to touch 45,000 tonnes. South Africa’s crude steel output was down by 3.5% to 561,000 tonnes during the month when matched with the production figures of 581,000 tonnes during the same month a year before.

Other regions

The crude steel production by the Middle East region has increased marginally by 0.7% during the month of May ’17 year-on-year. EU-28 region recorded jump of 2% in crude steel output. The output by the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) has dropped by over 7% during the month. Meantime, Oceania region recorded 12.9% surge in output.
