Global crude steel production rose 1.9% year-on-year in August

The crude steel production by South American countries dropped significantly during the month of August this year.

Global crude steel production rose 1.9% year-on-year in August

BRUSSELS (Scrap Monster): According to the most recent statistics published by the World Steel Association, the crude steel production by 66 member countries was 134.125 million tonnes (Mt) in August this year, rising by 1.9% comparison with production of 131.565 Mt during same month a year before.

South America

The crude steel production by South American countries dropped significantly during the month of August this year. The total monthly output tumbled by 6.6% to 3.491 Million tonnes.

The total crude steel production by Argentina during August was 343,000 tonnes, down considerably by 27.5% in comparison with the August 2015 production of 474,000 tonnes. Brazil produced 2.768 Million tonnes of crude steel, down marginally by 1.1% when compared with 2.799 Million tonnes production achieved during August last year. The Chilean August crude steel production increased slightly by less than 1% to 100,000 tonnes in August this year. The total crude steel production by Colombia was down by 10.7% to 105,000 tonnes in August this year.

Ecuador’s crude steel output dropped significantly by 22.4% on year-on-year basis. The crude steel output by Ecuador was 50,000 tonnes in August this year, down when compared with 64,000 tonnes during August last year.  Paraguay’s crude steel output increased sharply by 12.9% during the month.

The crude steel output by Peru recorded significant rise of 32.9% year-on-year. The crude steel output of Uruguay witnessed decline of 45% when compared with the year before levels. Venezuelan production dropped considerably by 89.1% year-on-year from 92,000 tonnes to just around 10,000 tonnes.

North America

The crude steel production by North American countries dropped marginally by 3.0% during the month of August year-on-year. The production totaled 9.548 Mt during the month.

The total crude steel production by Canada during August this year was 1.100 Mt, slightly down by 1.6% when compared with the August 2015 production. The US produced 6.703 Million tonnes of crude steel, slightly lower by 3.4% when compared with 6.936 Million tonnes production achieved during August 2015. The total crude steel production by Mexico edged higher by 1.9% from 1.659 Mt in August ‘15 to 1.690 Mt in August this year.

The Cuban crude steel production decreased sharply by over 20% year-on-year to 20,000 tonnes. The crude steel output by El Salvador was estimated at 10,000 tonnes in August this year, down by nearly 8% when compared with August last year. Guatemala produced 25,000 tonnes in August. The crude steel output by Trinidad & Tobago nosedived to zero in August this year from 54,000 tonnes during same month the previous year.

Asia

The crude steel production by Asia rose by 3.4% during the month of August 2016 year-on-year.

The total crude steel production by China during August was 68.570 Million tonnes, rising by 3.0% when compared with the production of 66.573 Mt during August 2015. India produced 8.141 Million tonnes of crude steel, higher by 9.4% when compared with 7.442 Million tonnes production achieved during August last year.

Japan reported 1.5% jump in monthly crude steel output during the month. Japan's crude steel output climbed higher from 8.785 Million tonnes in August 2015 to 8.918 Million tonnes in the same month this year.

South Korean crude steel production increased slightly by 1.8% from 5.763 Million tonnes in August 2015 to 5.866 Million tonnes in August this year. Meantime, Pakistan’s crude steel output totaled 210,000 tonnes during the month.

The Taiwanese Apr ‘16 crude steel output rose 10.7% year-on-year to 1.890 Million tonnes from 1.708 Million tonnes during same month last year. Also, Thailand’s crude steel output increased by 18.4% from 304,000 tonnes during August last year to almost 360,000 tonnes this year.

Africa

The crude steel production by the African region tumbled by 6.0% during the month of August year-on-year.

Egypt produced 433,000 tonnes of crude steel, lower by 4.5% when compared to 453,000 tonnes production achieved during August 2015. Libya’s crude steel output surged to 31,000 tonnes during the month of August this year, when matched with 3,000 tonnes produced during the same month a year before. Morocco’s output plunged by over 30% to 45,000 tonnes, when compared to 65,000 tonnes production achieved during August 2015. South Africa’s crude steel output plunged nearly 10% to 446,000 tonnes during the month when matched with the production figures of 495,000 tonnes during the same month a year before.

Other regions

The crude steel production by the Middle East region increased by 2.6% during the month of August ’16 year-on-year. EU-28 region recorded marginal decline of 1.4% in crude steel output during August this year. The output by the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) dropped by 2.7% during the month. Also, Oceania region recorded marginal drop of 0.1% in output.
